Slightly rambly (unhinged?) episode about Evil Dick, the two cults I was in (one for 18 years, the other for 5 years), protests, a kid visit, our autistic neighbor, Alisha's magical thinking regarding the return of her rash, and my newfound internet daddy.
Good Luck with the visit from your niece--is that what she is to you? Sorry that you won't get to attend the protest like you would rather do.
There's even a No Kings protest scheduled for the small Kansas town that I live in, which I was rather pleasantly surprised to find out, given that this is a very red locale. In fact, I was working on making the sign as I was listening to your podcast 🙂 We have a fairly sizable group of people who are organizing the event. Most of them are elderly retired people who won't have to worry about being ostracized professionally for their opposition to Trump but are definitely concerned that their Social Security and Medical benefits will be in jeopardy under this psychopath administration. Sadly, I know for a fact that there's also at least a handful of working age adults in this town who are opposed to the Trump regime but are afraid to attend any sort of public protest for fear that it could cost them their job. Thankfully we shouldn't have any problems with law enforcement here.
Maybe I'll get a picture of me at the protest and post it in the notes.
Yes she’s my niece. Thank goodness she’s autistic! Autistic kids are the best and remind me a little of how I used to be before stuff started affecting me.
Ohhh I hope you took a pic! I’d love to see that. Thank you for listening and commenting. I also hope nothing crazy happened where you are.
Yep, I have a soft spot for neurodivergent children in general--partially because they remind me of how I once was. The other day, when I was at a local author event at a public library, there was a boy of whom I think may have been autistic, asked me for some bubble wrap from my box of books because he liked it as a stim toy. I was so tickled that he was so open about his need for a stim that I gladly handed him all the bubble wrap in my box.
Thankfully the protest went by very well without incident. The worst that happened was a few rednecks drove by and shouted obscenities while flipping us the bird--but that's to be expected. In fact they made such idiots of themselves it was kinda funny 🤣 Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture of myself at the event though.
That's a good way of putting it. I think I have a soft spot for them too. My niece visited this weekend. She's autistic and living her best life because her mom doesn't stifle her. She's allowed to say what she wants, stim, etc., and her mom loves her just as she is. Makes me wonder how my life to this point would've been if I knew this stuff when I was a kid.
Glad you went to the protest! It's okay you didn't get a pic. Maybe next time. Not exactly the most exciting place to take a selfie 😆
Yep, I think about that a lot in terms of how differently my life might have turned out, had they knew more about different neurodivergences during the time I grew up and had I come from a loving, supportive family who fully embrace all aspects of who I was. I often wonder how the entire culture of neurodivergence might look in a world where just about every parent is well versed in neurodiversity and society is more progressively structured overall.
Yep, a protest is indeed kind of a weird place to take a selfie Lol.
One thing is for sure,it was definitely uplifting to watch the news and see the high volume turnout for these protests nationwide, compared with the administration's pathetic attempt at a military birthday parade for Trump 🤣🤣
