In my life, I've probably had about five or six if not more cats that I have had a special attachment to. My first was a Mane Coon that I found abandoned as a kitten when I was in high school. As he got older, he would follow me just like a dog, always staying near me, whenever I walked anywhere. He never ran off or anything. He lived for about twelve years. And up until recently, I had a tortoiseshell cat that I was very strongly bonded with. I had to have her put to sleep last year. She was seventeen so I made peace with the fact that her time had come, but still her loss was very painful to me.
I love cats in general but sometimes you just find one that you have a special bond with. I think this is perfectly normal. I've got one tortoiseshell cat now that I very much love even though she's kinda skittish and standoffish. She seems to get her fill of being petted and loved a little sooner than other cats I've had 😂
Oh I love this so much!!! Thank you, that's so validating!
Some cats just stick to your soul, don’t they? Your Maine Coon sounds like he was more than a pet. He was a shadow, a protector, a best friend. And 17 years with your tortie is a lifetime of love. Even when we know it’s time, it still guts us.
I get what you mean about certain bonds. It’s not just about loving cats, it’s about that one who just gets you. I'm glad you have another tortie now, even if she’s a little “love you, but from a distance.” She’s lucky to have you.
Thank you for your kind words. Yep bonding deeply with cats is totally valid. And I don't think a lot of people realize just how deeply cats can bond with their owners. It almost seems like it's often neurodivergent people, who tend to understand this. We sometimes do have a proclivity to bond well with animals that many people consider somewhat less lovable.
Yes! I agree with all of that. Over the years I’ve been made fun of for my deep love for animals, especially cats. One time someone called into work because their dog had to get put to sleep and they were too upset to come in the next day. Colleagues made fun of him behind his back, saying it’s not like the dog was a family member. Like wtf. Those people were neurotypical, of course. Pets are FAMILY.
Exactly, they are indeed family. I can't get over how many people don't get this and can even be breathtakingly insensitive about situations like the loss of a pet as you describeed in that workplace situation. Again, I don't understand people like that. Maybe that's a good thing Lol!
